Zambian leader visits AIDS centre

        Kenneth Kaunda, founder- president of the Republic of Zambia, visited Y R G Care, a Chennai-based AIDS research and educational centre, and interacted with the patients over there yesterday.

        He said the economically downtrodded sections of society should be properly taken care of by such institutes and added that it is equally important to empower affected women with employment oppor-tunities so as to make them self-reliant and emotionally strong.

        He also said developing countries should make efforts to promote safe sex practices among the people and added that celebrities from various walks of life should be involved in the anti- AIDS movement for a better and hopeful future.

        He also said free treatment of poverty stricken patients was an absolute necessity. He said it should be the mission of every nation to respond to the needs of affected people who presently are not receiving care and support.
