Demo to regain lost land

NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 13:

As many as 150 people from the Narikoravar community and social activists held a demonstration at Alla maram, Chenerikuppam, Tiruvallur district to protests against the repeated evictions of 53 families near the Poonamallee bus stand.

The 53 families, as reported earlier in News Today, were first evicted when the Poonamallee bus stand was expanded and shifted to a vacant plot behind the Sundar Palace theatre. They were then forced to live on the streets, when the rains flooded that plot. After the monsoon was over, Metrowater started draining surplus water into their vacant plot.

All the affected families have ration cards and voters' ID.

The Tiruvallur tahsildhar and the local panchyat union members assured the demonstaters that they would take steps to ensure that they had a place to stay before the end of this week.

The tahsildhar also promised the 53 families that they would get the land promised by the government in Chenerikuppam.

The Narikoravars, however, said that they had little faith in their promises. They announced that they were trying to mobilise more people for a larger demonstration on March 16, so that the higher officials would be forced to take notice.
