Wildlife census in Mudhumalai

        The Wildlife Department has undertaken a general census of Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park spread over 271 sq. km, under the guidance of Wildlife Warden Rakesh Kumar Dogra. The census which began yesterday would continue till 18 March.

        In Theppakadu, a training programme was held in this regard. Though as many as 148 volunteers came forward to assist only 32 were selected. Around 70 forest officers and 25 trainee students from colleges and 17 beat watchers were given all the basic training required for taking a census. People from the Kerala and Karnataka State Forest training colleges and the national Wild Life Fund would also be assisting with the census.

        As many as 30 groups with 60 cameras would be deployed to monitor animal movement at different locations, including 17 water holes. The census teams will have to cover a minimum of 15 km a day in their assigned beats.
