Giving cops the right image

officials at the DVD release function in Chennai yesterday.

        Segments of a 28-minute action-packed film Kavalar Ungal Sevagar showcasing the efforts of police personnel in cracking crimes, will be screened before every show in city theatres beginning today.

        Speaking at a function to release the DVD of the film produced by Abirami Ramanathan, commemorating 150 years of the Chennai police, Tamilnadu Director General of Police (DGP) D Mukherjee urged filmmakers to avoid negative portrayal of police personnel in their films. Instead, he wanted film-makers to highlight the role of the police department in maintaining law and order in the State.

        'Of late we have been cracking down on video piracy, a problem that has been threatening the growth of the film industry,' he said.

        Talking about the film, he said 'it exactly portrays how police personnel of all ranks immediately respond to complaints of the public.'

        Releasing the first copy of the DVD, Home Secretary S Malathi said, 'the image of police among public needs to improve and this is an apt approach to reach the masses.'

        Chennai city Police Commissioner Letika Saran released the prints of the movie to representatives from 13 city theatres including Coimbatore Theatre Owners' Association president Tirupura Subramanian, where the film will be screened in all theatres on a rotational basis.

        'One thousand copies of the film have been given to the Commissioner to be shown in schools and other institutions while 300 prints are being given to 1,200 theatres across the State to be circulated within the next six weeks,' said Tamilnadu Theatre Owners Association president Abirami Ramanathan.
