Bus burning case: HC stays verdict

        The Madras High Court today granted bail to 25 persons who were convicted to 7-year imprisonment in the case of death of three girl students in a bus burning incident at Dharmapuri. The court also temporarily stayed the verdict awarded by the lower court until the hearing of the appeal is completed.

        It may be recalled that in 2000, when AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa was awarded imprisonment in the Pleasant Stay Hotel case, violence erupted in various part of the State.

        At Dharmapuri, a bus was set on fire by a mob allegedly owing allegiance to AIADMK which killed three students. Police arrested 31 persons and cases were filed against them. The hearing commenced in a lower court and the final verdict was delivered only last month.

        Three of them were found guilty of serious offences such as murder and attempt to murder and were given death sentence. The rest were handed over seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

        A review petition was filed by them at the Madras High Court. The petition came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justice

        R Balasubramaniam and Justice

        M Jayapaul today. The court granted bail to the 25 persons and also stayed the verdict of the lower court.
