Have what the Thevars have

        Days Inn Deccan Plaza, one of the popular vegetarian hotels in Chennai, has kicked off a food festival Thevar Sappadu at Olives for the first time. Thevar Sappadu as the name suggests gives an opportunity to enjoy the best of food from the Thevar community hailing from Pattukottai, Muthupettai, Mannarkudi, Thiruthiraipoondi of Tamilnadu.

        Executive chef A Selvaraj from Thiruthiraipoondi has tried to deliver his best to the palate. Clad in white shirt and dhoti, with a big sickle in one hand, two men with big moustaches welcome the guests.

        As one enters the hotel, films on Thevar especially the popular Kollywood actor Kamalhassan-starrer Thevar Mahan and Virumaandi are shown on the television mounted on the wall just to created a mood for the guests. In addition, straw roof with posters drawn like a sickle along with garland, spread across the restaurant add colour to the festival.

        After having the welcome drinks such as Neer Moru and Paanagam, Thevar Sappadu brings to you the favourite Thevar customs in a buffet menu filled with Pudalangai Usili, Chow Chow Vathakkal, Kathirikka Mochakttai Masala, Avarakkai Puli curry, Chakkara Valli Kara Masala, Jeeraga Kathirika Kootu, Kodamilaga Bajji, Sooriapurva Varuval, Kalan Pattani khorma and Kizhangu adai.

        After the fruit salads, sprouts, a guest can have the option of taking idli or Paniyaaram to begin with.

        For rice lovers, steam rice with sambar, rasam is available while for the variety food lovers, there is a separate section for Ellu Thengai Rice, Pachamilagai Pattani rice and the Thayir Sundi Sadam.

        Vengayam Vaththal, Sundakai varuval, aviyal, Cholam Palkonda Milagu Curry, Peerkangai Kosthu curry too deserve mention.

        The sweet corner is also another attraction as the guest has the choice of selecting the delicacies like Paruthikottai Payasam, Kambu Kozhukkatta, Sugiyan, Athirasam and Payaru Laddu . Ice creams are also available on request.

        A meal does not end with Paaku and Jeera and along with them you have vethalai and seeval.

        Later, speaking to News Today Selvaraj explained that the food items are prepared in mud pots to give the authentic taste, and preparation for the day begins early in the morning.
