NT Bureau
Chidambaram, Jan 13:

Tension prevailed in Chidambaram following the murder of a senior DMK office-bearer at Pichavaram in the wee hours of today.

The local DPI cadres staged a road-roko demanding the police to take immediate action in connection with the murder.

According to police, Subramaniam (40), a resident of South Pichavaram Village near here and DMK local unit secretary, had warned a gang involved in gambling last night in the neighbourhood. This resulted in war of words between them.

An agitated Subramanian even disconnected the power supply to the streetlight and shouted at the gang to leave the place immediately.

In a fit of rage, the gang attacked Subramaniam, his wife and his family-members and fled the scene. Subramaniam, who sustained serious bleeding injuries, died on the spot. His family-members were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Tension gripped the locality after the news of Subramaniam's' death spread like a wild fire. Over 200 cadres belonging to Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) gathered at the South Pichavaram village and resorted to a road-roko. As a result, traffic in Chidambaram - Sirghazhi road was affected. Senior police officials including Cuddalore District SP Sanjay Kumar rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators. They assured to take immediate action on the murderers. Police have formed special teams to catch the culprits.
