Sir,
I refer to the column Point Blank by T R Jawahar - 'From Singaram to stink' (News Today, 8 September). If the city of Mumbai has been known as the financial/business capital of India; Delhi, political; Chennai, once that of intellectual, now the dubious and loathsome garbage smelly capital of India. Any visitor to the city would hardly fail to notice the garbage strewn around.
The Constitutional proviso are explicit that the State should take such measures as are consistent with the good of the society and it is needless to add it includes health inter alia among the other things which it should strive to discharge through its agency and this continues to be in letter, not in spirit.
And when it comes to any issue of importance concerning public health, it is doubly incumbent on the govenment not to indulge in passing the buck but to plunge head-on into action but, as has been the case with the powers-that-be, it chooses to indulge in mud-slinging politics instead of sprucing up the city.
Putting the blame on the outsourcing agencies will not explain away the lapse on the part of the rationalist government and the deprival of an ambience of healthy living to the people, who also need to develop the attitude of keeping their environment clean and hygiene in a health conscious manner by not adding to the garbage clearance woes that betide the government.
Let the government realise the health hazard that such mounds of garbage pose to the citizens and act with vision in order that the city becomes garbage-free, the people of the city disease-free and the environment, eco-friendly lest it should find its place in the pages of Guinness Book with the dubious distinction of being the dirties city.

Sir,
The Indian Parliament has become a mockery of events. So much dust was created over the 123 deal by both the Left and Right namely CPI(M) and the BJP and yet not a meaningful debate was conducted thanks to the attitude of the ruling Congress.
The dumb people of India elect an alliance with the fond hope tha they would deliver the goods for the prosperity of the nation. On the other hand they fight with each other in Parliament and waste the national time and the time of everyone. What a national shame!
The Speaker has only one job to do. To adjourn the House whenever it meets! A school headmaster is better placed than the Speaker (Somnathji) who used to roar like a lion, when in the opposition.
The lion has become a mouse! The action of all the three - the ruling Centre, Right and the Left seemed to be an action-packed drama for nothing! God save India!

Sir,
One must applaud the frank and blunt comment made by actor Suneil Shetty. He has rightly said that the loss of ODI series by the Indian cricket team was given front page coverage by many newspapers. However, the stupendous performance of our hockey team was hardly given any coverage, relatively.
It is basically because of this step-motherly treatment to all sports (except cricket) by the media that we do not produce world class sportsmen. Nor do sponsors come forward give fillip to the other sports. This has proved very detrimental in grooming young promising talents in other sports arena.
