Festival of dance and music

        Kalakshetra, in association with Alapana Trust, will host a festival of dance and music between 14 and 16 September as a tribute to Sankara Menon to commemorate his centenary year. He was one of the founding pillars of the institution, and a renowned scholar.

        Each year Kalakshetra hosts a festival of performing arts in September. It is a part of the institution's long-standing commitment to presenting artistic excellence to the community.

        O S Arun, founder - trustee of Alapana Trust and Leela Samson, director, Kalakshetra, have come together to conduct the festival.

        Each day will feature a music concert followed by a Bharatanatyam performance. This September, Kalakshetra is hosting three of the premiere dancers in Bharatnatyam - Malavika Sarukkai, Alarmel Valli and Priyadarsini Govind.

        The festival commences with a vocal concert by Priya Sisters on 14 September at 6 pm followed by Mohana Krishna by Malavika Sarukkai at 7.30 pm.

        On the next day, the events begin with a veena recital by E Gayathri at 6 pm followed by a Bharatanatyam recital by Alarmel Valli 7.30 pm.

        The festival concludes on 16 September with a vocal concert by T V Sankaranarayanan at 6 pm followed by Bharatanatyam by Priyadarsini Govind at 7.30 pm.

        Alapana trust, a registered Trust with Arun as its founder - trustee. It has been formed to conduct programmes on performing arts and other related activities like lecture demonstration, workshops etc to enrich the knowledge of fine arts lovers and rasikas and to serve the fine arts world. The object of the trust is to conduct and organise activities to promote fine arts by giving platform to young and new talents with classical arts and also to aid them with materials like cassettes, books, magazines and videos.

        Various leading performing/upcoming artists in their respective fields have participated under the Alapana Trust Music and Dance festival over the years.
