Chennai, Jan 12:
India is emerging as the leading player in diamond processing as far as the global market is concerned. The awareness levels about diamond certification is also increasing among Indians, International Gemological Institute (IGI) CEO Roland Lorie said.
Talking to reporters here on Wednesday about the changing scenario in the Indian gem and jewellery industry and the growing importance of diamond certification, Lorie said India exported cut and polished diamond worth around $12 billion annually, using modern technology for the same. Currently, India accounts for 14 per cent of world jewellery fabrication, he added.
The Belgium-based IGI, established in 1975, certifies around one million diamonds worldwide every year and has 10 laboratories including one in Mumbai.
'Each diamond is scientifically analysed and graded by experienced gemologists. While purchasing diamonds, a consumer has to demand for certification,' Lorie pointed out.
IGI has also established a gemology school worldwide including one in Mumbai, where they impart education on various facets of diamond grading and jewellery designing.
International Gemological Institute (India) managing director Tehmasp Printer said, 'traders and students in Mumbai actively take part in polished diamond grading course, rough diamond grading course, hearts and arrows programme, improvement of finish, grading of mounted jewellery programme and professional jewellery design programme'.
He said mobile laboratories had been set up at six places in India including one in Chennai to meet the growing needs of the jewellery trade across the country.
He also said that by the
year 2010, India would have a major role to play in the global diamond
market.
