VIT University has been into research activity in diverse sectors like disaster management, defence equipment and space technology at an investment of Rs 15 crore, said Chancellor G Viswanathan.
He was speaking at the University Day that was celebrated yesterday at the Anna Auditorium located on the college premises. 'To encourage students in their academic skills, incentives are being provided by the VIT each year. As against a grant of Rs 88 lakh given away last year, an amount of Rs 1.20 crore was presented as incentives to college students this time,' the Chancellor said. As many as 954 students received the incentives from Viswanathan. In the next year, the cash incentives would be further increased, he assured.
Besides excelling in academics, the VIT students have undertaken NSS camps in three villages. Though there was good relationship between the US and India in the education front, 'we are yet to universalise basic education as practised in the United States,' he said. Recently, VIT has entered into MoUs with seven universities in China for exchange of students and faculty. 'Under these agreements, there are over 500 Chinese students presently studying at VIT,' he informed.
Presiding over the function as the chief guest US Consul General David T Hopper lauded the role of VIT in spreading higher education in the State and noted with appreciation the efforts of Viswanathan in this regard.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Radhakrishnan read VIT's annual report in the presence of Pro-Chancellors Shankar Viswanathan and G V Sampath. A report on International Relations was presented by the Department director G V A Rao and the multifarious activities of the Students Union was detailed by its chairperson Vallikannu.
