Fort St George to regain lost glory

        The demolition of an unsafe portion of building no XIV, Fort St George, will be carried out after taking all the necessary technical precautions to minimise collateral damage, said a press release yesterday.

        An army technical committee is already in the process of restructuring, reconstructing and restoring the buildings inside Fort St George, in consultation with the Archeological Services of India (ASI) and INTACH, a nongovernment organisation.

        The Tamilnadu State Government was also been requested to assist the army at the recently concluded Civil Military Liaison Conference. The renovation cum restoration project is estimated to cost Rs 15 crore and would take any where between three and four years for completion.

        The project would also include cleaning the moat and paving a heritage walk for tourists.
