'PMK to tie up with traders federation'
NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 10:
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is joining hands with a frontline traders federation of Tamilnadu to intensify its agitation against corporates and multi nationals entering retail sector in the State, informed sources said here today.
An important ally of the ruling DMK, the PMK has already completed a round of demonstration against corporates in retail including yesterday's agitation by the party's women wing in front of Reliance shops in Chennai.
Now, in a bid to step up
pressure on the government, the party has decided to strike a deal with
Tamilnadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai (TNVSP), exclusively to agitate against
multinationals and corporates and bring pressure on the government, sources
added.
The move to clinch the deal with TNVSP — the umbrella organisation of State's various small trade bodies is said to be in its last phase and this would help the party better the image of 'friend of the small' and get new constituencies like the traders.
According to PMK sources, the party has completed fine tuning its plans to strike against Reliance fresh in Chennai by its women wing members.
In the coming days, more innovative methods with emotive appeal would be taken by the party to catch the attention of the people.
Interestingly, even during yesterday's agitation in front of Reliance outlets, the PMK women demonstrators fell at the feet of buyers on their way to the outlet and pleaded with them not to support the 'Goliath which would bury the small Davids of Tamilnadu.'
The party has already roped in the services of two leading advertisement companies to advise it on the communication line to be adopted to further the cause of the poor traders and sell the idea that Reliance in the long run would be detrimental to the State's interests, and not just the traders, it is said.
By bringing the leading trade
body and its affiliates to the streets alongwith it, the PMK is hoping
to intensify the stir and bring pressure on the government so that it could
help better its image, if not send Reliance home, sources added.
