Honing skills on retail management

  The retail sector is witnessing a transition from traditional form to the moderm malls, departmental stores, super markets, speciality stores not only in metros and other major cities but even in small towns at taluk levels making the Indian consumers for a new shopping experience emerging retail in the world. India is viewed as a potential goldmine for global as well as domestic majors.

        And the reason for such a rapid change in the retail scenario in India's vast potential middle class and its untapped retail industry besides the growing consciousness of the consumer about product quality and service. India's total retail market is estimated at Rs 9,30,000 crore. The situation heralds the entry of the national and international giants such as Reliance, Wall Mart, Tesco into newer markets in India.

        Fast changing lifestyle with strong growth and conducive demographic patterns are main reason for the boom in the retail sector.

        In this scenario, there are lot of career options in the retail industry. A career in retail offers more diverse range of occupations than most other industries. Having realised this situation, the Academy of Retail Management has come up with a solution for human resources requirement for the exciting and the fast growing retail industry.

        According to Academy of Retail Management executive director D Sugan Chinna Maran, the company has prepared a blue print to produce specialist to carry out the retail operational very efficiently and it offers certificate courses in retailing, retail management, visual merchandising for retail, customised 'on-the-job' training.

        ARM besides this offers host of other services including customised corporate training, skill development to retail outlet staff, event management for launching products and undertakes market surveys, product development, brand promotion and demand study.

        The course structure and curriculum has been developed by renowned academicians in consultation with experts from the retail industry. The ARM is extensively supported by the retail industry to carryout its objectives.

        Recently, Academy of Retail Management has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pothys to train 1500 employees of Pothy's at location in the outskirts of the city. The objective of the training program is to provide product knowledge, personality ad team building, developing interpersonal and sales skills. The training module is conducted in batches of 50 candidates.

        Similar training sessions for retailers like Naidu Hall, Nai-Haa and Viveks and government undertakings like TAHDCO, Co-optex, Khadi and Village Industries Board, Khadi and Village Industries Commission is in the pipeline.
