Three Plus-One students of Velammal School, Mogappair, P Karthik Raj, J Sanjana and R Anuradha, have brought laurels to the country as well as to their school by winning the 'Champions of Champions' honour in the sixth international life sciences symposium held in Singapore recently.

The symposium was organised by the Anglo Chinese School (independent), Singapore, under a theme 'Frontiers of sciences', and more than 45 schools from across 12 countries had participated in it. The trio's animation which dealt with the use of nanotechnology has been selected as the best project presented by the students at the symposium.

The students were given a cash prize of 600 Singapore dollars, besides certificates of merit. It may be noted that the school had represented India in the symposium.

In a felicitation ceremony held at the Velammal School on Monday, Vimala Gabriel, head of the department of Zoology, said, 'It was a good experience out there. We attended a few classes in Anglo-Chinese School and also visited few laboratories related to life science'. The students along with Vimala also visited Singapore Botanical Garden during their stay in Singapore.

Congratulating the students for this achievement, principal of the school P Prabakaran said, 'Velammal School always grooms its students in co- curricular activities, besides academic education'. He advised the other students of the school to emulate them and work hard.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr J T Jothinayagam of Ministry of Environment and Forest said, 'Most of the schools are concentrating on results, but Velammal concentrates on both, results and other activities.' Later, the students presented the project, which gave them the top honour in Singapore, to other students. It was followed by an interactive session.
