Clarion call to students to take up research

NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 8:

Students of economics should undertake research, Dr Raja J Chelliah, chairman Emeritus of Madras School of Economics (MSE) has said.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating 'Arthiki 07', an intercollegiate economics festival, organised by MSE in Chennai yesterday.

Referring to the post- reforms boom in the country and the increase in the leaning towards the globalisation, Raja Chellaiah said that it was necessary for economics students to undertake research and chart out a suitable course of action. He said students should take more initiatives on these lines.

Dr D K Srivastava, director, MSE, speaking on the occasion, said there were many pitfalls ahead for the country in spite of its economy growing healthily at the rate of nine to ten per cent. He also said uneven distribution of the benefits could trigger tendencies opposing the very objective of the reforms. So, the students should update themselves about the emerging tendencies, he added.

The festival was aimed at creating awareness and encouraging discussions among the students on various issues which have economic importance.

Quiz, debate, essay- writing, crisis management and crossword events were held on the occasion. Damodar Kamath, Chief Vigilance Officer of Indian Bank, gave away prizes to the winners. Dr U Shankar, honorary professor of MSE, also spoke. Students from various colleges across Chennai, participated in the festival.
