Where cleanliness is not next to Godliness

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 8:

What kind of writing on the wall is this?
Who would not rubbish this rubbish
outside a school compound?

The entrance to the Corporation Middle School located on Vaikkkorkaran Street is littered with garbage owing to the indifferent attitude of the residents staying close to the school premises.

Strewn around the entrance generously are used waffer covers, water bottles and other such things.

According to the headmistress of the school N Kanagavalli, it is the apathy of some of the residents which has made the situation come to such a state.

'During Christmas vacation, the school was closed during when certain irresponsible residents of the area dirtied the entrance by dumping the garbage at the entrance, ' she said in a frustrating tone.

The garbage has considerably dampened the spirit of the children who otherwise were in a jovial mood. 'After having thoroughly enjoyed the winter vacation we were in high spirit but that was not for long as we entered the school premises and found the rubbish around the entrance,' said Ramesh (name changed), a standard five student.

Agreeing with this statement were many in the faculty who said that such dastardly activities of the residents would have a negative impression on the innocent children. 'In school, we teach the children the importance of health and the significance of maintaining hygiene but what can we tell them about the rubbish at our doorstep, ' said one of the teachers.

Continuing in the same vein she said, 'when grown up people themselves do such unsavoury acts what can we teach the children.'

Another student of the school said that it is time little children taught these residents a lesson or two about cleanliness. 'We keep learning that cleanliness is next to godliness, but why aren't these people themselves not following those golden rules,' said Anush Padmanabhan (name changed), a student of class four.
