create confusion, especially to new visitors from outside the city and State. |
Similarities in the name of Tambaram and Tambaram Sanatorium railway stations create confusion to some people who visit the area for the first time in their lives.
Some section of the people demand that Tambaram Sanatorium railway station should be renamed. It is said that this was an old demand of the residents. Representations were also made. However, no action was taken. Some said even 'protests' were held some 20 years ago to rename the station.
Two different views exist on renaming the station. Some section of the residents as well as the civic body of Chitlapakkam demands that it should be renamed as Chitlapakkam, as it is one of the 'fast developing area' in the suburb.
But some people said it would be correct to name the station as just 'Sanatorium.' The famous TB Sanatorium (and AIDS) hospital is located here. Hundreds of people come here from different parts of the State and elsewhere to visit the TB Hospital.
Praveen, a native of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and an employee of an IT firm said, during his initial days in Chennai, he often mistook Sanatorium for Tambaram.
An old shop keeper of the area said it was not uncommon to see people getting down at Sanatorium thinking that it was Tambaram.
If authorities take action to rename the station, it will be helpful.
A senior resident of the area said representation has been made to the railway officials for a change in the name and it could happen only on the recommendation of the government.
C P Ramachandran, secretary, 12th Ward Welfare Association, said, the demand to rename it as Sanatorium is a reasonable one as TB Hospital is located here and it will also help avoid confusion especially for people who are not familiar with the area.
Chitlapakkam town panchayat
president Mohan said that the panchayat had passed a resolution in 2001
to rename it as Chitlapakkam. The local body would now follow up and take
further steps to see the change a reality.
