CM for grand Pongal fete

        Pongal is being celebrated every year for the world to know the Tamil community's best culture and tradition. Under the circumstances this year also it would be celebrate with much gaiety, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced.

        The Tamilnadu government has decided to celebrate the Pongal harvest festival, which falls on 15 January, in a grand manner throughout the State.

        Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, in a statement last night, said all government buildings and public places would be illuminated with 'serial lights' and people would be allowed to decorate public places.

        'People will also be allowed to organise community festivals in public places to celebrate Pongal,' he said.

        Government officials and civic chiefs had been instructed to make all arrangements to celebrate Pongal in a grand manner by organising folk art concerts, sports for all and distributing prizes, he said.

        Pongal was the only festival celebrated by all, irrespective of caste or religion and to thank the Sun God for helping farmers in their cultivation, Karunanidhi said, adding that it was the government's desire that the Tamil festival be celebrated on a grand scale.
