For innovation, promotion of new products

Varsity-industry link going far

        With an aim to promote links between the faculty members of University of Madras and industry people for the innovation and promotion of new products, Technology Business Incubator (TBI), University of Madras, organised 'Industry Academia Meet 2007' in Chennai today.

        Inaugurating the meet on the Guindy campus of University of Madras Vice- Chancellor S Ramachandran said TBIs were started to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. At a macro- level, TBIs are promoted for economic development and wealth creation to the country. It also envisages improving industry competitiveness. Moreover, it can convert job seekers to job providers.

        Ramachandran further said this venture also aims at the promotion of clusters of technology based on small enterprises, creation of awareness among small and medium entrepreneurs, facilitate start-up companies to develop products and processes and foster commercialisation of university technologies to small and medium enterprises.

        He urged professors and students that research should be focused on products, which can be useful to society. At the same time, products would be able to generate some money, as funds from the government is going down.

        He expressed the confidence that industrialists will be able to find out industrial partners in this meet and urged professors and students to work hard to get more patents.

        Earlier, delivering the welcome address P Rajendran, member, Board of Governors, TBI, said, though the TBI was started seven years before, this is the first time it was bringing industry people and academicians together. TBI has registered 11 patents in the last seven year.

        D Sakthisekaran, dean, Industrial Consultancy, and G Gangi Reddy, managing director, TBI, were also present at the function.
