Patient knifed in Chennai GH

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 8:

Three persons assaulted a patient at the General Hospital. The man, whose name had been given as Kannan, sustained severe cut injuries.

According to police sources, Kannan (32), a resident of Pallavan Road Gandhi Nagar picked up a quarrel with Naresh Kumar (20), another resident. Last night, Kannan relieved himself at the orchard of Naresh. This led to a verbal exchange and then fisticuffs. Both lodged separate complaint at Triplicane Police Station. Police had sent them to the hospital for treatment.

All this would be termed an everyday incident, police would even say 'minor.' But what is shocking is that it should have taken place in a government hospital, where the policeman is expected to know if someone is carrying a knife.

Naresh Kumar's friends — Ramesh, Saravanan and Kalaivannan — who visited him at the hospital attacked Kannan with a knife in the full glare of other patients. Kannan was operated today.

Following this, Kalaivannan was arrested. It was more shocking, patients and visitors said, that the two others escaped. Assistant Commissioner Balachandran and Inspector Shankar of Flower Bazaar Police are in charge of the case.
