Chennai, Jan 8:
A gang, pretending to be customers, decamped with jewels weighing 22 sovereigns from a shop at Adyar. Police say it must have been a North Indian gang. But they would not say what led to that suspicion.
Five persons, two of them women, came to the shop, run by one Kosiram (33), at Vananthurai near Adyar. They had a look at various designs of the rings on display, selected two and asked Kosiram to have them wrapped.
The gang which spoke in Hindi, informed the owner that they would return to collect the rings after visiting a temple nearby.
After they left Kosiram opened a showcase to rearrange the jewels. He said he got a shock to find jewels worth 22 sovereigns missing.
He lodged a complaint with the Sastry Nagar police. The formalities started. A special team headed by Assistant Commissioner Hari came to the shop, arranged for fingerprints to be taken. They asked the usual questions, noted the answers, and left.
It may be recalled that a
similar thing took place yesterday at Purasawalkam. The thief had diverted
this jeweller's attention and walked away with diamond-studded jewels worth
Rs six lakh.
