More firms hire VAT students

Having a 100 per cent placement record for diploma holders, the T S Srinivasan Centre for Vocational and Advanced Training (C-VAT) had its graduation day along with 10th anniversary fete on Saturday at its sprawling campus in Vanagaram, a suburb.
The vocational institute set up in 1997 with liberal contributions from the TVS group of companies offered industrial training and the students of various programmes have regularly topped the regional skill contests, apart from winning national-level awards. In the past 10 years of its existence, all the 385 students who passed out of C-VAT were placed in leading industries across the country. Also, 82 students who were given diploma certificates on the occasion had been recruited by firms through campus interviews.
C-VAT offered three-year training in NAC (National Apprentices Certificate) and polytechnic courses with focus on multi-skilling through an interdisciplinary approach and on-job exposure at the shop-floors of industrial houses. Past lecturers and industrial consultants at C-VAT recalled the journey of the institute in catering to the labour requirement of industries. The vocational centre had provided 20 students to Wheels India Ltd for its new plant at Uttaranchal. Also, the company would hire another 26 students from C-VAT for their upcoming plant at Sriperumbudur, said V K Subramanian, vice-president, HR, Wheels India Ltd. In the past decade, the company had trained over 400 C-VAT students for their polytechnic degrees.
H Lakshmanan, executive director, Sundaram Clayton Ltd, said the institute had benefited from technical experts and the facility offered by the TVS group, the promoters of C-VAT. Recalling his experience at the vocational institute, G Ritter, a German trainer, said it was rewarding to work at C-VAT and interact with its faculty.
R Mukundan, consultant to C-VAT, said the staff and the trainees were the fourth pillars of the institute which had gained reputation only with their total support and involvement. The ready acceptance of C-VAT students in the labour market showed the growing demand for skilled workers in industrial units, said N Ragunathan, member, Governing Council, C-VAT.
In her special address, Malini Srinivasan, director, C-VAT, said but for the generous support from TVS group, the vocational institute would not have reached its present status as a premier centre for industrial training.
