New way to treat waste water found

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 6:

'Proper and hazardous free treatment of waste water is of utmost importance for safeguarding public health and hygiene,' said Swami Sathyapriyananda, secretary, Rama Krishna Mission Vidyapith, Chennai.

He said this on Wednesday while announcing the invention of a new application of a polymer named sky gel in phycoremediation which is supposed to be a cost-effective method to treat waste water from industrial units.

The invention has been jointly developed by Vivekananda Institute of Algal Technology, a research unit of RamaKrishna Mission Vidyapith, in collaboration with Japanese bio company Nichi-In Bio Sciences.

Sky gel which has been discovered by a Japanese professor is also supposed to be known for its water conservation property as it swells to around 200 times its volume upon absorbing water and keeps giving it to the plants when mixed with soil.

S Abraham, director, Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine, said Indian technical educational institutes should invest a lot more in R&D in the agricultural field to aid farmers and added that this collaboration would go a long way in cementing Indo-Japanese ties in the long run.

The Japanese government had approved this technology to be used in roof gardens and horticultural activities.

The organisers also said that sky gel can be used for micro algal cultivation and maintenance and is believed to be efficient in enhancing bio-remediation of industrial effluents.
