Vaiko and rebels cross swords

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 5:

The gloves are off and the war (of words) between the MDMK general secretary Vaiko and the rebel leaders of the party is well and truly on.

While Vaiko said today that the general council meeting convened by him on 10 January was the real one with 'real' members, rebel MDMK presidium chairman L Ganesan and general secretary Gingee Ramachandran claimed that they represent the real MDMK and declared the meeting organised by their former leader as void.

They also alleged that Vaiko was having a huge amount of 'illegal money' with him.

Speaking to reporters here, the rebel leaders said their efforts in taking the party to power in the State went in vain due to the activities of Vaiko.

They said Vaiko had spent a huge sum of money to retain the party members with him. However, they said, 'we would prove that we are the the real MDMK.' They also said they don't have the idea to capture the party headquarters.

Elsewhere, in a statement, Vaiko reiterated that the original general council members would participate in the meeting convened by him and added that the meet conducted by the two rebel leaders were backed by the ruling DMK.

He also said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was taking all efforts to 'ruin' the meeting with the help of police and hooligans.

Stating that the attempts made by Karunanidhi to erase the MDMK from the political arena had failed, Vaiko said the Chief Minister had involved in activities which could bring disgrace to his position. He also said the government had to take responsibility if any untoward incident happened during the general council meet.
