the children could enter the school, if the sand mounds continue to be there, ask residents. |
Huge mounds of sand, excavated and filled on the arterial Medavakkam Main Road, Keelkattalai for underground drainage works has blocked the entry to Holy Family Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
The school reopens today and parents and teachers are worried that if sand mounds right in front of the main school entrance are not cleared soon it would be just impossible for the students to enter the school.
The works for underground drainage which is underway in Medavakkam Main Road, Keelkattalai and some nearby pockets, which comes under Pallavaram Municipality, is a real test of endurance for the residents and road users.
Mohammed, whose child is a student of Holy Family School called up News Today and spoke about the problem.
When News Today tried to get in touch with the contractor, said to be M/s Sekar Deepak Construction Limited to find out the status, they were unavailable for comment.
However, the labourers who are working day and night hoped that the works would be over, before the day the school reopens Monday. 'We are aware of the difficulty the students may have to endure if the works are not over soon,' they said. When contacted, sources in the municipality and the traffic department of the police said that works were started near the school quite early only to ensure that the job was completed in time so that students will not be put into trouble.
'Actually, the drainage work should have started about 100 metres south of where they are doing it now,' they said and added that the job would be over before the school reopens.
While some faulted the school
authorities for 'failing' to take up the issue with the municipal authorities,
others expressed apprehension that at the current speed, the contractor
would not be able to complete the work in time. Residents, parents and
students hope that authorities should ensure early completion of works.
