        Sir,

        Indian opener Wasim Jaffer scored a brilliant century at Cape Town in the third Test against South Africa. In an excellent partnership with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Kaarthick he put on 153 runs. It was a display of great character by the opening batsmen.

        At a time when Indian batting is at a somewhat low ebb these two youngsters have given big boost to the team India on foreign soil. Kudos to the new opening pair.

        Team India which posted a historic win at Johannesburg in the first Test was outplayed in the Durban Test. Whether Jaffer and Kaarthick have provided the platform for a series win remains to be seen. It must be said our bowlers have done a fine job so far, have the wherewithal to do it again.

        It is a good thing that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was awarded a punishment he deserved and that too quickly. The same should be followed by us also and Afzal should be hanged without any further delay. Those who try to support proven criminals are a blot to civilised society.
