Varsity inks pact for collaborative research

        University of Madras and Mediclone Biotech Pvt Ltd has signed an MoU for research collaboration.

        Speaking to reporters after signing the MoU here yesterday, Madras University Vice-Chancellor

        S Ramachandran said the MoU would generate resources for the university as the government funding accounts for only one percent of the university's expenditure.

        He said industry representatives would help the academicians commercialise the products developed by the university with slight modification.

        The MoU is expected to integrate academic and industrial research to bring innovative approaches and bio-technology products. The Department of Zoology and the University Industry Community Interaction Centre (UICIC) in collaboration with Mediclone will translate and design proven research concepts that the society can use.

        Five major joint technology initiatives have been identified under the MoU such as isolation and charaterisation of potent toxin molecule from snake venom and mapping venom glands, development of immunodiagnostic kit for detection of early kidney damage, study of human C reactive proteins and its detection, isolation and characterisation from unconventional animal sources, development of immunotherapy for bladder cancer, Mathiyazhagan, managing director, Mediclone Biotech Pvt Ltd said.

        The research would be conducted at Mediclone and University laboratories to strengthen career prospects for the researchers, he added.

        K K Tripathi, advisor Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, M Arumugam, HoD of Zoology and Ranganathan, Registrar-in-charge, University of Madras were among those present.
