Chit fund owners held for duping depositors

        Three chit fund owners who defrauded several people of Rs nine lakh at Thiruvannainallur near here were arrested by the police today.

        According to police, one Paneerselvam (48) and his two wives Mallika (43) and Baby (36) were running Manakula Vinayagar Chit Finance Ltd and collected huge sums of money from the public. But the depositors got angry when the chit fund owners did not pay their money back even after the maturity period. The residents' fears came true when the company closed its operations a few days back.

        Based on a complaint filed by one Gandhi, a retired school teacher, Villupuram police arrested the three.


Man in police net for robbing Railway staff

        A 27-year-old man has been arrested for robbing a railway employee of Rs 40,000 cash.

        According to police, Padmanabhan (50), a resident of Peravalur, was returning home after withdrawing the cash from a bank with his mother when a man snatched the money from him and fled. A chase to catch the thief was in vain.

        Padmanabhan preferred a complaint with the Peravallur police station. Acting swiftly, police conducted investigatons and arrested one Pushparaj, a resident of Otteri and recovered the money from him.


Casual labourer found dead

        A 46-year-old casual labourer was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Tirumangalam here.

        Police identified the victim as Manoharan belonging to Tirumangalam area. It is suspected that the labourer must have died due to consumption of excess alcohol. Based on a complaint lodged by his wife Sasikala, Tirumangalam police recovered the body and sent it to Government Kilpauk Hospital for postmortem. However, further investigations are on.
