A 10-year-old girl is struggling for life at at District Government Hospital here after she was raped by two persons at Kottamedu village, near Thirukovilur, on Monday (26 Feb).
Police had arrested one of the two accused Pandian and a search is on to nab the absconding culprit. Bhagyalakshmi, 10, is studying at the V Class in a primary school at Kottamedu and has been living with her grandmother's house as her parents are employed as unskilled labour in Chennai.
When she was sleeping at night on 26 February, it was alleged that the duo — Pandian, 15, and Sivalingam, 18 — crept into the house and raped her. As she fell unconscious, Bhagyalakshmi was rushed to Thirukovilur Government Hospital the next day. Her parents in Chennai were also informed of the incident.
The village people held a katta panchayat before elders and assured the parents Rs 20,000 would be given to them as compensation to what had occurred to their girl. However, the condition of the girl worsened and she was shifted to private hospital on Tuesday (27 Feb).
But due to steady deterioration of her health, Bhagyalakshmi was again admitted to Thirukovilur Government Hospital yesterday and later on transferred to District Headquarters hospital for intensive treatment.
Following the rape complaint,
Thirukovilur Police have registered a case and arrested Pandian. A search
is on to nab Sivalingam, who is evading the police net.
