        India is on the threshold of changes but it does not show any promise of changing itself as warranted by its resources and skills besides the money and reserves it possesses.

        As a people, we are talkative and have a proclivity for situations in which when there are nine people debating anything, we have ten opinions with the authors of which resist any consensus.

        By fortuitous circumstances, we have become a power to reckon with because of the growth of our national product and the urge to work of everyone to keep alive his trade.

        And being too intelligent to be useful not even to ourselves, we have preserved divisiveness even with our awareness of the peril inherent in it. We always agree to differ.

        The rescue from this position came the wrong way when pelf accumulated. That was what has provoked corruption to find the money for one-upmanship games of prince and pauper alike.

        We got our freedom through spotless leadership using the weapon of non-violence. The absorption with the fight to be free submerged our selfishness and differences of religion and caste.

        Our leaders of those times introduced us to democracy based on universal suffrage. When the titans exited and petty minds took over, we shared in that pettiness to maintain ourselves.

        Every politician had a price to be accessed and corruption spread fast from top to bottom of institutions all along the line with big and small despots lording over the people.

        Vote bank considerations impelled the poisoning of the political system making a mockery of values of any kind. Money and muscle power ruled the roost.

        The bigger tragedy is that political fights have been infecting the campuses and every political party has a student's wing provoking and sustaining brazen indiscipline.
