Don't pay capitation fees, students told

NT Bureau
Chennai, July 3:

All students who have applied for engineering colleges will be allotted seats and therefore need not pay capitation fees, State Higher Education K Ponmudi has said.

Releasing the ranklist for admission to engineering at Anna University here yesterday, the Minister said the counselling would begin after the medical college admission during when many students who fail to get seats would turn to engineering colleges.

In Tamilnadu, there were around 250 engineering colleges. This year, since the Common Entrance Test (CET) had been cancelled, admissions were made based on marks scored in the Plus Two examinations.

The ranklist was to be released on 25 June. As there was a case pending in the court on the admission procedures, the list could not be released.

However, in a major development concerning admissions for engineering, the Madras High Court yesterday upheld the State government order putting an end to the commercialisation of education.

According to the Act, the unaided minority institutions should surrender 50 per cent of their seats and non-minority colleges 65 per cent to the government pool for admission under single window system.

As many as 62,000 seats were available under government quota in counselling, with 30,000 more seats available under single window counselling for management quota seats. Also, this year around 22 self-financing colleges had come forward to surrender 100 per cent of their total seats to the government quota.

A total of 94,960 applications were received for engineering. Out of this, 90,803 were found to be eligible. According to the rank list released yesterday, six students had scored 200 / 200 marks.

They are P Arvind of Erode, P Praveen Kumar of Coimbatore, R Nithyanandan of Namakkal, M Karthikeyan of Hosur, Jerin C Shekar of Kanyakumari and Thahseen Nilofar of Ramanathapuram.

The Minister said call letters for counselling would be sent to all the students and it is certain that all of them would get a seat either in the government quota or under the management quota through single window system. Hence parents and students had been requested not to pay capitation fees at self-financing colleges, he said.
