AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA   VOICE MAIL

Reprehensible

        Sir,

The murder of 11-year-old Aravind in Chennai recently was too gory and bitterly illustrates to what deplorable depths some of even our teenagers can sink in pursuance of petty material gains.

Every year, I spend the last week of December in Chennai, to savour the pleasures of Margazhi music festival, but this time, my annual year-end break has turned out to be too painful for me, due to the brutal end of an innocent boy.

Even if the music that I heard in some of the concerts was divine, I found myself absolutely unable to enjoy and appreciate it as the face of young Aravind kept flashing across my mind, even as my soul was immersed in the melodies that were constantly flowing from our reputed Vidwans and Vidhushis. How inhuman some of our humans can be! It is this poignant thought that keeps haunting me ever since the sad exit of Aravind.

The high incidence of juvenile crime is too alarming. Unless and until we check it completely, we cannot call ourselves a civilised society.

        T S Pattabhi Raman, Coimbatore.
