'Cattle population here should be preserved'

        Cow in India is a sacred animal and it is as sanctified as a temple, Shree Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji, Sankaracharya of Sri Ramachandrpura Math, Hosangara, Karnataka, has said.

        He was attending a public reception as part of the go samrakshanam or cow protection campaign for the preservation of indigenous cattle, here recently. The reception in Chennai was organised by Dharma Paripalana Sabha.

        He further said cattle population in the country was decreasing and only 33 varieties were still remaining.

        Addressing a gathering, Madras High Court Justice S Jagadeesan said, 'Shree Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji is playing a great role in the preservation of cattle wealth. The math has undertaken a number of social, educational and other works for the welfare of the rural people'.

        Speaking on the occasion, danseuse Padma Subrahmanyam said, 'there is a need to create awareness among the children as well as among elders about the preservation of cattle wealth. Swamiji has undertaken a great effort in this regard.'

        The math would organise a nine-day international conference on preservation of indigenous cattle in April at Hosanagara in Karnataka. Around 2.5 lakh people, including scientists, are expected to participate in the conference. It is open to all sections of the society irrespective of their religion and age groups.

        The main objective of the conference is to enlighten and propagate the various social, economic, medicinal, agricultural, and many other utilities of Indian breed of cattle. Symposia, lectures and seminars about Indian breed of cattle and allied subjects by eminent scholars would be held during the conference. A chariot festival would also be the part of the conference.
