Six partymen held for 'imposing bandh'

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 2:

Six AIADMK men including former Panchayat chairman were held in Sriperumbudur by the police for threatening the shopkeepers and retail outlets to down their shutters.

Congress MLA T Yasodha led the hunger strike yesterday at Padappai bus stand near Sriperumbudur along with her partymen as part of the State-wide protest undertaken by the DPA and its allies for the speedy implementation of Sethusamudram project.

But at noon, former Panchayat chairman Ravichandran and his AIADMK men burst crackers at the bus stand to welcome the Supreme Court's warning to the DMK government for violating its earlier ruling against the proposed bandh in Tamilnadu. The police deployed in the area intervened and chased away the trouble mongers.

However, after the fasting was over, the AIADMK men led by Ravichandran went around the locality to warn the shop keepers and retailers not to open their shops for the day. Hearing of the incident, Manimangalam inspector Muthuramalingam rushed to the spot and arrested Ravichandran and his partymen including Ponnambalam, Ranganathan, Delhi Babu, Sahayam and Veeraraghavan.

All the six were produced before the Tambaram Magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. They were lodged at Puzhal Central prison.
