Tuticorin Port Trust handled 10.032 million tonnes during the period from April to September, 2007. while compared with the performance of the same period of the previous year. This achievement is about 17.98 per cent higher during the current six months, according to a press release issued by A Subbiah, deputy chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust
The Ministry of Shipping has given a target of 203.85 lakh tonnes for the current financial year. The crossing of 10 million tonnes milestone is possible through handling of more thermal coal, containerised cargo, finished fertilizers like urea, MOP and fertilizer raw material like rock phosphate, timber logs, copper concentrate during the current six months. Except in petroleum products. The Port has taken proactive measures by issuing the Trade Notice for handling of cargo at anchorage. Port has facilitated the major users to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding for offering concessions for improving volume through the Port.
One trade promotion meeting
was conducted at Chennai. More trade promotion meetings and roadshows are
planned to attract more cargo through Tuticorin Port. Port has also facilitated
mechanised handling of timber logs for improvement of productivity. K Suresh,
chairman incharge, Tuticorin Port Trust congratulated the workers, employees,
officers and other stakeholders for achieving this feat and in making Tuticorin,
the preferred Port.
