Chennai, Oct 1:
Fifth Main Road is in bad condition. |
Mohanarangam Road leads to the subway. |
The widening and relaying of Mohanarangam Road in Nehru Colony, near Pazhavanthangal subway is pending for a long time. This has caused dismay to roadusers and residents.
Seemingly, it is a Herculean task for all buses and lorries to drive through winding narrow streets from 5th Main Road and College Road till Vembuliamman Koil point, near the subway.
If heavy vehicles find it difficult to negotiate this stretch, the high traffic of these vehicles - in the backdrop of narrow streets and lack of space - make walking a hellish experience for pedestrians.
Mohanarangam Road is said to be under the charge of Highways Department. Alandur Municipality has reportedly agreed to share a part of expenditure for widening and relaying this road. The municipality is also said to have budgeted for this work. News Today spoke to residents on the issue. They wanted the authorities to take up the work immediately so that they could be spared of the problems they are undergoing now.
'If this road is widened and relaid soon it would help bus and rail commuters besides others,' said K N Jeya Bhavani, a resident.
'Unless people agitate over pending issues nothing concrete will happen,' lamented T S Vaidyaraman, another resident.
According to Councillor, B Kumar, the work is stalled due to land acquisition issues. Some building owners do not cooperate. They do not want to part with their portion of their land. This is the only stumbling block, Kumar said.
'I am ready to give a portion of my land to facilitate road widening work,' the councillor said.
On this issue, Chairman, Alandur Municipality, R S Barathuy said that a resolution was passed and sent to the Municipal Administration department.
'The Government has to take
up the work,' he said.
