Abstraction on display

In a show of Tenth Planet dimensions in abstractions we see a young energetic group of artists evolving new ideas and concepts in a non-representational sphere creating dramatic outcome that's sublime, beautiful and serious.

The show featured paintings of Hukum Lal Varma, Surendra Pal Joshi, Rajeshpatil, Suresh Kumar, R B Holle, Rahim Mirza, Gopinath P, Athiveerapandian, Vasanth Wankhade, Achutan Kudallur, Suchi Chidambaram, N Ramachandran, V Narayanan, Prasanna Kumar, Saravanan and Sohan Qadri.

N Ramachandran, speaking on his works that were titled as 'Self Portrait' series, said that he had always been obsessed with 'my self' and added that he has been doing self-portraits keeping in view concepts like how he felt all along these years. 'My journey in art till now, had led me to a point, where I don't feel myself as a seperate entity, what I feel as my 'self' is not my self. The 'self' is a collective thought of my environment I live in and the people I live with wherever I go', he said. He said that he felt that they are all a part of him/the whole...nothing neither personal nor emotional. I am able to relate, observe and express myself only as how they are or 'as it is', he said.

Ramachandran also mentioned that the making of the art work is also accountable in the process of its expression and added that he had included the methodology of each work for the same reason.

Abstraction has been the great escape for many an artist over the years. It started with the impressionists and the post impressionists took it to another level creating concepts and justifying the departure from representational trends that have been the part of history. This departure be it on a global arena or on an Indian one. it saw the references in science and philosophy.

Mark Rothko worked on a sublime level, while Jackson Pollocks active canvases were a reflection of his concepts and search for a relevant form of self-expression for the time he embarked on his poured and splattered works. In India where the representational trend was very strong, one could see the initial departure from artists like V S Gaitonde and Ram Kumar and Raza.

It was possible in this country to go deep into philosophy and support the roots of abstraction. This show would travel to various cities in India. This show has started on 21 September and was on till 30 September in Apparao Galleries, Chennai. This show will be on in Delhi from 17 October to 30 October this year at Triveni Garden Theatre.
